Choosing a built-in fridge comes down to three decisions: which type (a fridge-freezer combination, a standalone fridge, or a wine cooler), which height fits your kitchen column, and — on wider single units — whether you want one wide door or a twin French Door setup. This guide covers all three.

Type: combination, standalone, or wine cooler

A fridge-freezer combination is the most common choice — one unit, two temperature zones. Works for most households, since it doesn't need two separate niches.

A standalone fridge and a standalone freezer give more fridge or freezer capacity in the same combined width than a combination unit, but need two separate niches in the kitchen column.

A wine cooler holds wine at the right temperature and humidity — dual-zone models let you hold red and white at different temperatures at once. Several manufacturers' built-in wine coolers are in range.

Height: under-counter, standard, or XXL

Fridge types and heights Under-counter 82–92 cm niche Standard tower 140–178 cm XXL tower 194 cm French Door 90 cm, twin-door

Four typical height classes — a taller tower means more capacity, but also more kitchen-column space used.

An under-counter fridge (fits an 82–92 cm niche) suits a smaller kitchen or works as a second fridge. Standard-height towers (140–178 cm) are the most common choice for a full-size built-in fridge. XXL models (up to 194 cm) give noticeably more capacity but need a correspondingly taller kitchen column — check before ordering cabinetry whether you're planning an XXL model, since changing column height afterwards is expensive.

Door type on wider models

On a wider single-unit fridge, some models use French Door-style twin half-doors instead of one wide door — easier to open fully in a tighter kitchen aisle, since each door needs less swing space. Common on 90 cm-wide premium models.

The zero-degree zone — useful, not essential

Some premium models offer a separate compartment held right at freezing point (0°C) without actually freezing — this keeps meat and fish noticeably fresher for longer than a standard fridge compartment. A useful extra if you buy fresh fish or meat in larger quantities at once.
