How to choose a kitchen sink

A kitchen sink is bought roughly once every 15 years and used more every day than any kitchen appliance. Make the choice at the start of the kitchen design, because the sink's size and mounting method fix the cabinet width and the worktop cut-out.

Dimensions and cabinet width

Rule of thumb: a sink needs a cabinet at least 10 cm wider than the sink itself. A 60 cm cabinet takes a single bowl, 80 cm a double bowl or one large bowl with a drainer, 90 cm and above gives you a free hand. A depth of 18–20 cm is the modern standard — a deeper bowl takes an oven tray, which does not go in the dishwasher.

Mounting methods

Top-mounted sits on the worktop and is the most forgiving — it suits any worktop material including laminate, and a fitting error is easier to correct.

Undermounted fixes beneath the worktop so the transition is seamless and crumbs wipe straight into the bowl. It requires a stone, composite or quartz worktop — it does not work with laminate, because the cut edge is exposed to moisture.

Flush-mounted brings the sink rim level with the worktop. The cleanest result, and the most demanding: the cut-out has to be exact and is usually done by the worktop fitter.

One bowl or two

In a kitchen with a dishwasher, one large bowl is usually the better choice over two small ones — it takes an oven tray and a large pot, the things that do not go in the machine. Two bowls make sense if you wash a lot by hand or want food preparation and washing up kept apart. A drainer area replaces the dish rack and keeps the worktop dry.

Care

Granite and ceramic take ordinary kitchen cleaners; steel prefers a soft cloth and wiping along the grain. No material likes abrasive powders or prolonged chlorine. Limescale comes off most easily when it is dealt with regularly rather than once a year.

Common mistakes

The most frequent is choosing the sink after ordering the cabinetry — the cabinet width is then fixed and the choice narrow. The second is forgetting the tap: the sink's hole diameter and the tap's spout height have to work together, especially with a deep bowl or under a window. The third is buying accessories later — chopping boards and drainer baskets are model-specific and generally cannot be fitted to another sink.
