Downdraft cooker hoods

A downdraft extractor hides in the worktop and rises behind the hob at the touch of a button.

What to check

Space below — the unit usually takes the full cabinet depth — no drawer fits under the hob.
Extraction direction — steam is caught horizontally beside the pan rather than from above.
Who it suits — islands, and low-ceilinged kitchens where a canopy would be in the way.
Planning — decide early in the kitchen design, not after the units are ordered.

Downdraft cooker hoods

How it works

The panel hides inside the worktop and rises at the press of a button behind the hob. Steam is drawn horizontally, straight from beside the pan rather than from above. When not in use the appliance is not visible at all.

Who it suits

An island where nothing should hang from the ceiling and the sightline has to stay clear. Also a low-ceilinged kitchen where a conventional hood would be in the way.

What to allow for

The unit needs considerable space under the worktop — usually the full depth of the cabinet. That means no drawer fits under the hob any more. Plan this early in the kitchen design, not later.

Alternative: a hob with built-in extraction, which needs no separate panel.
