Choosing a dishwasher starts with the width and how visible the machine may be in the run of cabinets.

What to check

Width — 60 cm takes 13–15 place settings, 45 cm suits a narrow kitchen or a smaller household.
Basket flexibility — an adjustable upper basket and folding tines change real capacity more than a couple of settings.
Level of integration — fully integrated disappears behind a door; semi-integrated leaves the panel visible.
Noise — decisive in an open kitchen — 44 dB is audible, 38 dB effectively silent.
Drying — AutoOpen cracks the door at the end and dries plastics better than condensation.

Choosing a dishwasher

Width and capacity

A 60 cm machine takes 13–15 place settings and suits most families. 45 cm takes 9–10 and suits a narrow kitchen or a one to two person household. Capacity matters less than basket flexibility — an adjustable upper basket and folding tines change what actually fits more than a couple of settings do.

Degree of integration

A fully integrated machine disappears behind the cabinetry with the control panel on the top edge of the door. A semi-integrated one leaves the panel visible — easier to use, but it breaks the run of units. Fully integrated models often project a light onto the floor to show they are running.

Noise

In an open-plan kitchen this is one of the most important figures. 44 dB is audible, 40 dB unobtrusive, 38 dB effectively silent. The difference costs money, and it cannot be changed later.

Dosing and drying

Automatic dosing (Miele AutoDos with PowerDisk, for instance) gives a more consistent result and avoids overdosing. For drying, AutoOpen — the door opening itself at the end of the cycle — is more effective than classic condensation drying, particularly on plastics.
