Microwave ovens

A built-in microwave sits in a cabinet beside or above the oven, keeping the worktop clear.

What to check

Placement — built-in frees the worktop; a countertop model is cheaper and moves with you.
Combi models — with grill or fan heat it works as a small second oven and browns as well.
Capacity — 20–25 l for reheating, 30 l and up if you also cook in it.
Size — the 45 cm compact format fits the same tall unit as the oven.
Power — 800–1000 W is typical; evenness matters more than peak output.

Choosing a microwave

Built-in or countertop

A built-in model goes into a cabinet above or beside the oven and keeps the worktop clear. A countertop one is cheaper and more flexible but takes a real share of the work surface. Built-in models also come in a finish that matches the rest of the appliances.

Combination models

A microwave with a grill or fan heat works as a small second oven — useful when the main oven is busy or when cooking small amounts. Fan-heat models also brown, which a plain microwave does not.

Capacity and power

20–25 litres suits reheating and defrosting; 30 litres and up if the microwave will also be used for cooking. 800–1000 W is normal. More power shortens reheating time, but evenness matters more than the peak figure.

Compact range — 45 cm appliances that fit the same tall housing as the oven.
