Cooker hoods
Choosing an extractor starts with where it goes and where the air ends up. Power comes third — poor installation defeats even a strong motor.
What to check
- Mounting — on the wall, from the ceiling over an island, hidden in a cabinet, or rising out of the worktop.
- Ducted or recirculating — ducted vents outside and works best; recirculating filters through charcoal and needs filter changes.
- Width — the canopy should be at least as wide as the hob, and wider still over an island.
- Noise — often the deciding factor in an open kitchen — the gap between 60 and 45 dB is large.
- Filter upkeep — grease filters are washed regularly; charcoal filters are replaced every 6–12 months.
