Wall-mounted and island cooker hoods
A wall-mounted canopy is the usual answer when the hob sits against a wall. Over an island you need a ceiling-mounted island hood.
What to check
- Ducted or recirculating — ducted needs a route outside and works best; recirculating filters through charcoal and suits an existing kitchen.
- Width — at least as wide as the hob; wider catches more.
- Height — 60–65 cm above an electric hob, 65–75 cm above gas.
- Over an island — extraction is harder than against a wall, so choose more power.
- Fixing — an island hood needs a load-bearing ceiling — a suspended ceiling alone will not hold it.
