Refrigerators and freezers

Choosing a fridge starts with how it is installed and the niche size — those two decide which models are even possible.

What to check

  • Installation — built-in disappears behind the cabinetry and takes your own door; freestanding holds 10–20% more at the same width.
  • Niche height — common sizes are 88, 122, 140 and 178 cm — a couple of centimetres out and it will not fit.
  • Capacity split — think about how much you actually freeze: a separate freezer or a combined unit.
  • Fresh zone — a drawer near 0 °C extends the life of meat, fish and vegetables several times over.
  • NoFrost — prevents ice building up, so the freezer never needs defrosting.
  • Noise — audible all day in an open-plan kitchen — 38–40 dB is quiet, 42+ dB is noticeable.
