What to check

Steel grade — AISI 304 is the minimum outdoors; near the sea AISI 316 handles salt far better.
Wintering — water lines must be drained for winter or a frost will split them.
A lid — a covered sink stays clean out of season and adds worktop.
Tap height — a low model fits under a window or canopy; a high arc takes a big pot.

Outdoor sinks and taps

Steel grade matters more than it does indoors

Outdoors a sink sits in rain, sun and frost all year. AISI 304 is the minimum. Near the sea, where there is salt in the air, choose AISI 316 — it resists salt corrosion far better, and this is not the place to save the difference.

Wintering

The most common failure of an outdoor sink is not rust but a frozen pipe. Before the first frost, shut the water off and drain the lines. On a model with a lid, close it too, so leaves and water do not collect in the drain.

The lid and the worktop

A sink with a lid gives the worktop back out of season and keeps the bowl clean. In an outdoor kitchen, where worktop is scarce anyway, that is more useful than it first sounds.

Choosing the tap

A low tap fits under a canopy or a window; a high-arc model takes a large pot. A pull-out spray earns its place outdoors, because it rinses both dishes and the worktop.
