Choosing a built-in waste sorting system comes down to three decisions: which cabinet width the system fits, how many bins and how much total capacity you need, and whether to mount it as a pull-out drawer inside a cabinet or on the worktop instead. This guide covers all three.
Cabinet width matters most
A 300 mm cabinet fits a single bin; a 600 mm cabinet fits several bins for different waste streams.
Waste sorting systems are built for specific cabinet widths — the common sizes are 300, 400, 450, 500, 600, 800 and 900 mm. That number refers to the cabinet's clear inner opening, not the system's outer dimensions, and a system with the wrong width simply won't fit. Measure the cabinet's free inner width before ordering, not the front panel width — hinges and side panels can make the difference several centimetres.
Blanco's SELECT II line offers the widest range of variants — the 60/3, 60/3 XL, 60/4 and 60/2 Orga all fit a 60 cm cabinet, but with different bin counts and layouts. Wesco's Ergomaster and Trio-Master 40.1 DT cover similar width classes with the German manufacturer's own solutions.
Number of bins and capacity
A single system can hold 1 to 4 separate bins, letting a household split waste into streams — general, recycling, biowaste, glass — without cluttering the cabinet with several loose bins. Blanco's SELECT II 60/4, for example, offers four bins at once, while the 60/2 Orga gives you two when finer sorting isn't needed.
Individual bin capacity typically ranges from 6 to 30+ litres, and sizes are often mixed within one system — for instance a 19-litre bin paired with a 30-litre bin. Total capacity should match household size and collection frequency: a larger family or less frequent collection needs more total volume, or bins fill up before the next pickup.
Pull-out drawer or worktop mounting
Most systems are pull-out drawers built into a cabinet — the cabinet door opens and the bin-fitted drawer slides out with it. Blanco SELECT II, Flexon II and Wesco Ergomaster all use soft-close runners, standard on premium lines.
Blanco's SOLON is the exception — a worktop-mounted sorting system that sits in a cutout in the counter rather than pulling out from a cabinet. It suits kitchens with no free base cabinet to dedicate to sorting but with worktop space above. Wesco's Rund 15L, meanwhile, is a compact round bin that fits a tight corner or cabinet where a full-size drawer won't.
