Short answer: Day to day, warm water, a soft cloth and drying are enough. Remove limescale with diluted vinegar. Never use bleach, abrasive pastes or steel wool. Each material has its own manufacturer cleaner.

Stainless steel sinks

  • Daily: wash and dry the sink to avoid water marks and rainbow stains.
  • Don’t leave wet cloths, plastic washing-up bowls, salt, vinegar, citrus or mustard in the sink.
  • Avoid: bleach, steel wool, abrasives and silver cleaners.
  • Hard water: Franke Twister cleaning paste (125 ml with sponge) prevents a matt limescale film. Use the soft side of the sponge.

In stock: Franke Twister, Blanco Polish.

PVD-coated (coloured) sinks

PVD is a thin, hard metallic layer on stainless steel.

  • Wash with a soft cloth and mild washing-up liquid.
  • Remove limescale with diluted vinegar.
  • Never use abrasive pastes, powders or scouring pads.

This is Franke’s official guidance for PVD tap surfaces. Check your sink’s manual for its exact instructions.

Composite / granite sinks (Silgranit, Fragranite, Tectonite)

  • Daily: rinse and wipe dry.
  • Limescale first: Blanco stresses that dirt sticks to limescale. Vinegar usually works: for Franke Tectonite, use 1 part vinegar to 3 parts water, leave it for several hours, then rinse.
  • Metal marks from pans: Blanco suggests a wet sponge with a few drops of cooking oil.
  • Avoid: chlorine bleach, drain cleaners, solvents and metal sponges. Blanco rules out bleach even when diluted.
  • Hot pans: let them cool a little first.
  • Manufacturer cleaners: the Blanco DeepClean Silgranit set, and Franke Colored Sink Cleaner, which also protects against water stains.

Ceramic sinks

  • Daily: a microfibre cloth and warm water.
  • Limescale: vinegar or a lemon-based cleaner.
  • Metal marks: Systemceram BioTopp, Blanco Ceracare or a liquid stainless cleaner.
  • Scratch or metal mark? Use Systemceram’s fingernail test: run a fingernail over the mark. If it catches, it’s a scratch. If it doesn’t, it’s a metal mark that a cleaner will remove.
  • Heat-resistant: Systemceram fires its sinks at 1240 °C, so hot pans won’t harm them.
  • Avoid: concentrated drain cleaners, abrasives and fluoride products (rust removers, toothpaste). Never mix cleaners.
