Short answer: Clean the metal grease filter every 3–4 weeks to 2 months, depending on the manufacturer; it usually goes in the dishwasher. On a recirculating hood, replace the charcoal filter at least every 4–6 months. A regenerable charcoal filter can be restored in the oven.
Which filters does a cooker hood have?
| Filter | Purpose | Found in |
|---|---|---|
| Grease filter (metal) | traps grease | every hood |
| Charcoal (odour) filter | removes smells | recirculating hoods only |
| Regenerable charcoal filter | same, but restored in the oven | selected models (Miele, Bosch/NEFF, Falmec and others) |
Grease filter: how often and how to clean it
| Miele | Bosch | |
|---|---|---|
| Interval | every 3–4 weeks | every 2 months |
| Dishwasher | 50–65 °C, upright | up to 50 °C |
- Washing may discolour the inner surface. This does not affect performance.
- Don't wash a heavily soiled filter together with your dishes.
- Avoid descalers, abrasive cleaners and oven sprays.
- Why it matters: a grease-saturated filter is a fire risk and cuts extraction.
Charcoal filter: when to replace it
- Miele: when smells are no longer removed, and at the latest every 6 months.
- BSH (Bosch, Siemens, NEFF): typically every 4 months.
A standard charcoal filter cannot be washed. Once it is saturated, replace it.
Regenerable (long-life) charcoal filters
These filters are heated in the oven so that they absorb smells again:
- Bosch long-life filter: 200 °C for 2 hours, every 4 months.
- Miele AirClean Longlife (DKF … R): reactivated in the oven following the instructions supplied with the filter. Do it in a well-ventilated room.
- Falmec Carbon.Zeo: regenerate every 4 months and replace after about 3 years. The exact method is in the filter's own instructions.
Always follow your filter's own instructions. Temperatures and times differ between manufacturers.
Filter saturation indicator
Many hoods flash a filter symbol after you switch them off:
- On Bosch, one flash means clean the grease filter and two flashes mean change the charcoal filter.
- After maintenance, reset the indicator by touching the symbol.
- On a recirculating hood, select the correct mode in the settings so the indicator counts correctly.
Simple maintenance schedule
| How often | What to do |
|---|---|
| Every 3–8 weeks | Wash the grease filter |
| Every 4–6 months | Replace the charcoal filter, or regenerate it if it is a regenerable filter |
| Once a year | Have the whole extraction system cleaned (EVS 812-2 in Estonia) |
