Short answer. A built-in dishwasher is 45 or 60 cm wide and about 55–57 cm deep. The height class you can fit depends on your niche height:
- standard models fit niches of roughly 80.5–87.5 cm;
- XXL models need about 84.5–92.5 cm.
Measure the niche before you choose the model.
Width: 45 or 60 cm
| Width | Typical capacity | When to choose it |
|---|---|---|
| 60 cm (appliance 59.6–59.8 cm) | 13–14 place settings | Most households; the standard cabinet width |
| 45 cm | 9–10 place settings | Small kitchens, or as a second dishwasher for glasses |
The cabinet opening is 60 or 45 cm. The appliance itself is slightly narrower, so it slides into a standard base-cabinet opening.
Height: standard vs XXL, the measurement that matters
The “height” printed on a dishwasher’s spec sheet is usually a niche-height range, not a single number. The range exists because the feet adjust. The ranges below are for the models we stock:
| Brand | Standard niche height | XXL niche height |
|---|---|---|
| Miele | 80.5–87 cm | 84.5–91 cm |
| Gaggenau | 81.5–87.5 cm | 86.5–92.5 cm |
| ASKO | 81.9–87.2 cm (XL) | 85.9–91.2 cm (XXL) |
| TEKA | 81.8–87 cm | — |

An XXL machine is about 4–5 cm taller inside. You gain room for tall plates and glasses, and often a third basket as well.
How to measure your niche
- Measure from the floor to the underside of the worktop. This is your niche height.
- Measure at the back as well as the front. Old floors are rarely level.
- Measure the niche width (60 or 45 cm opening) and depth (at least 55 cm; a standard 60 cm deep worktop is fine).
- Compare your niche height with the model’s range. It must fall inside the range.
Rule of thumb: niche height = worktop height − worktop thickness.
| Worktop height | Worktop thickness | Niche | What fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 85 cm | 4 cm | 81 cm | Standard only |
| 90 cm | 4 cm | 86 cm | Standard or XXL (check the range) |
| 92 cm | 2 cm | 90 cm | XXL |
The door front and the plinth
A fully integrated dishwasher is hidden behind a furniture front that matches your kitchen. Two points to check:
- Front height. The front must suit both the machine’s door and your plinth height. Some models make this easier with special door hinges, such as Gaggenau’s “F” versions with a flexible hinge (e.g. DF480101F) and Miele’s FrontFit models. Always check the installation drawing for the permitted front height and weight.
- Ready-made fronts. Miele sells stainless steel front panels for its dishwashers, with separate panels for standard and XXL models.
Before you order: checklist
- Niche height measured front and back
- Standard or XXL decided, and the niche falls inside the model’s range
- 60 or 45 cm width confirmed
- Kitchen maker told the model name, so the front and plinth can be made to its installation drawing
- Water, drain and a socket placed in a neighbouring cabinet, not behind the machine
FAQ
What is the standard height of a dishwasher?
Most integrated dishwashers fit a niche of about 81–87 cm, which suits the standard 82 cm kitchen base.
Can I replace a standard dishwasher with an XXL one?
Only if your niche is tall enough, typically at least 84.5–86.5 cm depending on the brand. Otherwise the kitchen base must be raised, and that is a furniture job.
Are all 60 cm dishwashers exactly 60 cm wide?
No. The appliance is about 59.6–59.8 cm wide, so it fits a 60 cm cabinet opening.
How deep is a built-in dishwasher?
About 55–57 cm. It fits under a standard 60 cm deep worktop.
