What to check

Milk system — check how it cleans — most rinse themselves, some need the hose removed by hand.
Grinder — a conical ceramic burr grinds more evenly and runs cooler than steel.
Size — the 45 cm compact format shares a column with the oven.

Choosing a coffee machine

Built-in or freestanding

A built-in machine goes into a tall housing beside the oven and keeps the worktop clear. A freestanding espresso machine is cheaper, moves with you and needs no preparation in the kitchen design. Built-in makes sense when the kitchen is still being built.

Water connection

A plumbed machine draws water straight from the mains — no tank to fill and the machine is always ready. That needs a water connection and a drain in the cabinet. Tank models typically hold 1.5–2.5 l, which means filling every day or two.

Milk system

If you drink cappuccino or latte, the automatic milk frother matters. Look at how the system is cleaned: most rinse themselves after every use, but on some the hose has to be taken apart by hand. In daily use that difference is noticeable.

Grinding

A conical ceramic burr grinds more evenly and heats less than a steel burr, which affects the taste. An adjustable grind setting is necessary if you change beans. In the compact range a coffee machine fits the same tall housing as the oven.
