Choosing a washer and dryer comes down to three decisions: separate units or a combined washer-dryer, side-by-side or stacked layout, and which drying technology. This guide covers all three.
Separate units or combined
A separate washer and dryer is the most common setup — each machine runs its own cycle, giving more combined throughput than a combined unit. Needs either two niches or a side-by-side/stacked layout.
A washer-dryer combo (2-in-1) fits in a single niche — a good choice when space is tight, but the wash and dry cycles can't run at the same time, meaning a longer total time whenever you need to both wash and dry in sequence.
Layout: side by side or stacked
A side-by-side layout gives both machines a comfortable working height; a stacked layout saves floor space.
A side-by-side layout (both machines standing next to each other on free floor space) gives both a comfortable handling height, but needs roughly 120 cm of wall or niche width. A stacked layout (dryer on top of the washer) saves about half the floor space, but needs a dedicated stacking kit — never place a dryer directly on top of a washer without one, since it locks the two units together and stops them shifting under vibration.
Drying technology
A heat-pump dryer is more energy-efficient and gentler on fabrics — it runs at a lower temperature and suits most fabric types. Slower than a condenser dryer, but cheaper to run over time.
A condenser dryer dries faster but uses more electricity. Needs no exhaust duct, just moisture drainage — a good fit when running an exhaust duct isn't possible.
