In a new kitchen, the most expensive mistake is choosing the appliances after the kitchen units have already been ordered. Built-in appliances set the cabinet dimensions, not the other way round. This guide shows the order in which to make the decisions.
1. Choose appliances before ordering the kitchen units
Every built-in appliance comes with an installation drawing that gives the niche dimensions. Pass these to your kitchen maker before the cabinets are built – then you never have to pick an oven, fridge or dishwasher to fit a cabinet after the fact.
2. Hob and cooker hood together
The hood should be at least as wide as the hob, and on a kitchen island the best solution is often a hob with integrated extraction, which needs space in the cabinet below. See the hob buying guide and the cooker hood buying guide.
3. Ovens and the tall cabinet
Decide whether the tall cabinet will hold one 60 cm high oven or two 45 cm compact appliances – an oven and a steam oven, for example, or an oven and a coffee machine. A warming drawer fits below. See the oven buying guide.
4. Refrigerator
The most common niche heights for built-in fridges are 88, 122, 140, 158 and 178 cm. The height determines how the cabinet is built, so choose the model before ordering the units. See the fridge buying guide.
5. Dishwasher
The width is 45 or 60 cm. For a fully integrated model, check the niche height (usually 82 cm, more for taller models) and the height of the door panel. See the dishwasher buying guide.
6. Sink, tap and waste sorting
The size of the sink depends on the width of the sink cabinet. An undermount sink needs a waterproof worktop (stone or compact laminate); a top-mount sink also works with ordinary laminate. The waste sorting system usually goes into the same cabinet. See the sink, tap and waste sorting guides.
7. One brand or several?
Appliances from one brand share a design and similar controls, and many connect to the same app (Miele@home or Home Connect, for example). Mixing brands is also fine – what matters is that the finishes and handle styles go together.
8. Timing the delivery
Order in good time, because items ordered in from the manufacturer can take several weeks, and agree the delivery date around your kitchen installation. Delivery within Estonia is free on orders over €1,000.
